Surprisingly, it may be easier to get to Mars orbit one day with astronauts than it will be to actually land: safely landing on the Red Planet poses some major challenges yet to be overcome.
So far, many Mars landers and rovers have used a variety of technologies to keep from crashing onto the Martian surface, everything from protective inflatable bags to retro-firing rocket and parachutes.
It is far from clear however, what technology and methods will be used to safely land humans.
Please join our Hangout, when our regular moderator, Tony Darnell, will discuss the present and future of landing on Mars with Tara Polsgrove (NASA Marshall Space Flight Center) and Michelle Munk (NASA Langley Research Center).
