Luis Fonsi Explains The Slow Success Of "Despacito"
Luis Fonsi is used to having hits. The Puerto Rican pop singer is a Latin music superstar, a guy who is used to riding a long wave of success and an artist whose string of chart smashes began when 2003’s "Quien te Dijo Eso?" topped the Latin charts. He’s gone home with the “Song of the Year” award at the Latin Grammys show, and has been deemed the “leader of the Latin Music’s New Generation” by Billboard magazine. But with the arrival of “Despacito,” Fonsi saw one of his most remarkable achievements so far. The video clocked a massive viewership in comparatively short amount of time. Premiering on January 12 of this year, it already has more than 1.7 billion views on Vevo. The track and video features reggaetón hero Daddy Yankee; the video shoot was directed by Carlos Pereza, and took place in La Perla section of old San Juan last December. A remix of the track, with a Justin Bieber feature, currently sits on the top of the Billboard pop charts. Vevo caught up with Fonsi to have him explain what was in his head when he wrote the song, how producers Andrés Torres and Mauricio Rengifo helped shape it, and how one track can have so much impact.
