Derrick the Executioner is the first boss in Nioh.
Dodge his attacks (to the side) and then get a few hits in. The axe works quite well here as it does the most damage in the early game. When he transforms into the second form wait for him to run towards you then dodge to the side, attack a few times, back off again and repeat.
