Why Are Distant Galaxies Aligned?
The Hubble Space Telescope has observed massive, ancient galaxies in alignment in the distant universe. What is the significance of this alignment and why do these distant galaxies do that?
We think that galaxies are scattered in the universe with random orientations. Sometimes it is noted that galaxies do seem to point at their neighbors. Why would that be?
To study this interesting idea, astronomers have looked at 65 giant galaxies with the
Hubble Space Telescope. Some fascinating alignments were found with the massive
galaxies being lined up with their surroundings very early in the universe. Might there
be earlier times when these alignments did not occur?
