From July 5 to July 11, 2017, a massive active region (named AR12665) traversed the Earth-facing side of the Sun. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) watched as the sunspot blew off "several solar flares, a coronal mass ejection and a solar energetic particle event," according the space agency's Goddard Space Flight Center.
