The environment around a supermassive black hole at the centers of galaxies are turbulent and dangerous places for stars to reside.
Surprisingly, it appears that stars can survive and actually be formed near a super massive black hole despite the tremendous tidal forces at play. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) suggest that star formation is indeed occurring surprisingly close to Sgr A* (at the Milky Way center). How is this possible? What sort of environment would allow this to happen?
Join Tony Darnell and Carol Christian during Afternoon Astronomy Coffee on December 14, 2017 at 3PM Eastern (Daylight) Time as they discuss with Farhad Zadeh (Northwestern University), Mark Wardle (Macquarie University, Australia) and Al Wootten (National Radio Astronomical Observatory) about this remarkable study.
