Воспаление околоушной железы. Наибольшее распространение имеет эпидемический паротит, вызывающийся особым вирусом. Есть и неэпидемический паротит, причиной которого могут быть травмы, переохлаждения (например, даже если намочить ноги в холодной воде), попадание инфекции в рану ротовой полости.
