In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew speaks with Guy Cherni of Atlas Dynamics, which has developed a tricopter specifically for commercial and industrial drone operations. Based in Latvia, Atlas has developed its platform for maximum flight efficiency. The airframe is made of lightweight carbon fiber and the company claims up to 55 minutes of flying time with a fully charged battery. It also promises 30 miles of range and a top speed of 85 miles per hour and encrypted video and telemetry downlinks. It also boasts a weatherproof design, meeting the standards of IP52. The primary means of flight control for the Atlas drone is a tablet-based system, used to receive video and telemetry and to control the aircraft using waypoints and an interactive map. The drone also incorporates interchangeable camera payloads, for visible light and thermal imaging systems. For remote, autonomous operations, Atlas developed the Nest: an enclosed hangar for the drone, which holds five batteries. The nest is capable of replacing and rechaging spent batteries allowing for repeat flight operations without human intervention.
