A tiny, tidy galactic neighbor of our Milky Way, named IC 1613, is surprisingly free of light obscuring dust, allowing astronomers to calibrate its distance very precisely at 2.3 million light years. The European Southern Observatory’s ESO’s VLT Survey Telescope scanned bright blue, red and orange stars and pulsing variable “standard candles” which shrink the distance error-bars even further. -- Full Story:
