In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew tests the IntelligentUAS VuIR: a self-contained, three-axis gimbal for a FLIR Vue Pro thermal imaging camera that can be mounted on a DJI Phantom drone. The VuIR provides stable airborne thermal imaging which works alongside the Phantom's own integrated 4K video camera, delivering simultaneous visible-light imagery. Included with the VuIR is a touch-screen control unit that controls the gimbal and the FLIR camera, as well as a video display for the infrared downlink. The system operates independently of the Phantom's battery, running of a pair of rechargeable, 9-volt lithium-ion batteries. Adding to the overall weight of the aircraft, the VuIR does impact flight time, as demonstrated with a flight endurance test. The VuIR provides video using a conventional, 5.8 GHz FPV system, which has the potential to cause interference with the Phantom's own control and video links.
