Fact #1. The first type of quadcopter took flight in the year 1907. It was known as the Breguet-Richet Gyroplane. It was a test vehicle that completed only a few short, tethered flights. Vehicles sporting four separate propellers would be devised, tested, and crashed throughout the 20th Century. They were mostly prototyped for the military.
Fact #2. It took rapid advancements in and miniaturization of electronics to make quadcopters viable. They also had to undergo a reimagining. They were no longer meant to be large enough to carry a person. Instead, today's models are small enough to be easily carried by a person. They're usually referred to in this capacity as drones. That's a slight misnomer. True drones would be independent enough to require no human interaction to navigate. But no matter their name, the personal and commercial uses are quickly advancing.
Fact #3. You can have a budget drone for less than the cost of taking your family to the movies. Many sport prices as low as $25. These won't have fancy 4K cameras attached, of course. They're in many ways more like toys than tools. But they are still a step above the remote control helicopters of the 1990s.
Fact #4. The cost of a unit with HD video capabilities is no more than a fancy dinner for two. $125 or less will get you streaming video and a wide flight range. They will still need to be recharged after only about ten minutes of flight time, however.
Fact #5. There are things you need to know before operating a drone. The biggest is that they are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Any drone that weighs over a half of a pound has to be registered through them. When doing that, you'll also learn additional details. These include the fact that you can't fly near airports, for instance.
