Are LiFePO4 batteries really safer than LiPo batteries, especially when used in RC transmitters?
Well if abused, they do puff, just like a lipo, but after I spent some time trying to resuscitate a puffed LiFe transmitter battery, I eventually decided to subject it to significant electrical and physical insult -- to see if I could make it vent flame and smoke like lipos do.
As you can see in the video, although two of the cells were charged and significant current was forced into the faulty cell, it did not ignite -- although the wiring did burn for a short while.
Perhaps not totally conclusive but a pretty good indicator that LiFe packs are safer than lipos -- although the number of lipo-related transmitter fires remains very, very small.
