Fact #1. A cell phone signal booster can only amplify the existing signal. It cannot create a signal, only boost a weaker one. Thus the name. The booster consists of three components: an external antenna, a signal amplifier, and an internal antenna. There is a cable, as well, that connects these pieces together.
Fact #2. The antenna is arguably the most important piece of the puzzle. It is designed to pull the signal from the nearest cell phone tower that your carrier supports. The amplifier takes the signal from the external antenna and amplifies it. The amplification is measured in decibels. Every increase in 3 decibels is doubling in its strength. Hence, 6 is twice as strong as 3. Then there's the antenna. It re-broadcasts the new and amplified signal. Your cell phone will recognize this stronger signal, resulting in fewer dropped calls, faster-loading data.
Fact #3. There are two types of external antenna. These are referred to as omni and yagi. The omni is an all-directional antenna, picking up equal strength in every direction. The yagi is pointed in one direction, much like a shotgun. For instance, you may know the cell tower is to the south of your location. You can point the yagi south for a more powerful signal receptor.
Fact #4. There are also two varieties of internal antenna. These are panel and dome. Panel antennas can operate and boost the new signal through multiple floors. They usually point in one direction. Dome antennas perch on a ceiling. They give equal strength to everything below them. They are not ideal for operating on multiple floors.
Fact #5. Compatibility is a big issue. Many major cell phone providers have compatible devices. They were even endorsed by the FCC in 2013. But companies can change their frequencies with little notice.
