Fact #1. PA systems are composed of four basic components. These are speakers, a mixing board, microphones, and cables. These items work together to make sure that voices are amplified. The mixing board lets everything interact without the sound getting muddied.
Fact #2. The better the mixing board, the more complicated the PA system can be. People who need a system for announcements in a small room won't need anything fancy. Just enough to make sure that your voice doesn't sound terrible. But elaborate band setups are entirely different. They require a number of channels that must be configured to complement each other. This is the role the mixer plays.
Fact #3. The other big consideration for a PA system is power. As a general rule, you should aim to have between five and ten watts per audience member. This range will allow for both ends of the spectrum. At the low end, people will be able to hear and still converse. This is useful for situations where announcements need to be made intermittently. The high end is another story entirely. At 10 watts per person, people wouldn't be able to hear construction happening next door.
Fact #4. They were originally marketed to hotels. At the turn of the 20th century, there wasn't a good way to make announcements to separate rooms. The Automated Enunciator, as it was originally called, took care of that. Within a couple decades, modern systems were invented.
Fact #5. The basic function of a PA has remained the same for over 100 years now. Technological advancements have made great improvements in the features and functions of these machines. The large amplifiers in old systems have been replaced with smaller units. Cables that cancel out interrupting frequencies are industry standard now as well. More complex and effective PA systems exist today, such as the ones used for live audio. These include mixing boards, powered speakers, and enhanced sound quality.
