Fact #1. The design of any ball pit is perfectly simple. All you need is a pit with walls of a certain height that can contain the balls at a minimum depth. Then you fill that pit with said balls. The big calamity comes when it's time to put it away. Many pits can be set up and collapse by means of inflation. Or by a collapsible spring-loaded hinge used in nylon clothes hampers. These are not only much cleaner than the mud pit in the back yard.
Fact #2. Very young children can get lost and become afraid to enjoy some larger pits. The sheer depth of the balls could become overwhelming. Luckily, children tend to be honest. Asking them in a straightforward fashion is always a good idea. They will let you know if they are worried about that possibility. Even if you are buying one as a surprise, there are ways to broach the subject.
Fact #3. The ball pit was born in the late 1970s. It's inventor came out of the mind of a man known as 'The Father of Soft Play.' He earned that title by innovating play spaces. His goals were to design for a combination of safety and the engagement of a child's imagination. This man, Eric McMillan, had become disgusted with the state of playground infrastructure throughout the US and Canada. He sought to change it.
Fact #4. The history of playgrounds is a really fascinating subject. McMillan gave an interesting interview to People magazine in 1979. He claimed that modern play spaces had become "architectural graveyards–grey asphalt slabs. They've been built by adults who've forgotten how to play." In that era, playgrounds were becoming mass market goods.
Fact #5. Nowadays the problem with playgrounds is almost the opposite. Today, there is a new generation of jaded adults. They have taken McMillan's notion of soft play and created spaces so safe that children are deprived of physical sensation of their world. Ball pits, remain a safe, imaginative landscape where sensation and creativity can harmlessly collide.
