On 15 September 2017, at 2:00pm PDT, the $2 billion European-American mission will end in a streak of debris across Saturn's sky. The spacecraft is intentionally de-orbited into Saturn’s atmosphere – sacrificing itself to protect Saturn’s children – preventing an accidental crash on one of the moons, which could support life. Years ago, Cassini could have been sent on to the ice giants Uranus and Neptune, or inward to explore giant Jupiter. But Saturn's mysteries kept her handlers enthralled. And an innovative, complex orbital campaign was developed. This clever blossom of gravity and inertia let researchers investigate changes of Saturn's seasons, and revealed many scientific surprises.
