Fact #1. Before VHS tapes and televised workouts, there were audio-only vinyl record workouts. These were nicknamed Vinylcise. They first appeared in the early 1920s. They were usually accompanied by a paper foldout with exercise diagrams. The earliest versions were the set of five Wallace Reducing Records, released in 1920-1922. These records were marketed towards women. Other records of the 1920s include Victor Records for Health Exercises, the Battle Creek Sanitarium Health Ladder, and Walter Camp's Daily Dozen.
Fact #2. One of the first exercise films appeared in 1928. It features a bunch of boy scouts showing off some fairly strange group exercise routines. At one point, they ride each other like human chariots. In the 1950s, the increasing popularity of televisions created a market for televised workouts. One of the most successful was The Jack LaLanne Show. It ran from 1953 until 1985. The workouts encouraged viewers to use items that could be found in their own homes as exercise props.
Fact #3. Home workouts were available on VHS in the 1980s. This was around the time that Jane Fonda released her first exercise video. It was so successful that it's often credited with launching the tape industry. The series also helped spark an aerobic exercise craze. Richard Simmons released an extremely popular video a few years later. It consisted of energy-packed workouts set to music by a live band.
Fact #4. Before buying a workout DVD, you should learn about the different types of exercise. There are three broad categories. They are aerobic, anaerobic, and flexibility. Examples of aerobic include hiking, jogging, and playing basketball. Anaerobic includes sprinting, weight lifting, and hill climbing. Finally, flexibility typically describes activities that we associate with stretching.
Fact #5. Exercise can be intimidating. A great way to supplement your workout DVD is by turning everyday activities into exercise opportunities. You can dance while cleaning your home. Perhaps try performing jumping jacks while waiting for your microwave to beep. Raking leaves is an excellent calorie-burning activity, as well. You can even do something as simple as getting off the bus a stop early.
