See The 10 Best Flashlights on Ezvid Wiki ►►
Fact #1. The first flashlight was patented in 1899 by British inventor David Misell. This was made possible by the invention of the dry cell and miniature incandescent electric light bulbs. This device was safer and more convenient than torches, candles, and lanterns. It was odorless, smokeless, and emitted less heat overall. On top of that, it could be instantly turned on and off.
Fact #2. Early flashlights were little more than an expensive novelty. They suffered from low sales and low manufacturer interest. The development of the tungsten-filament lamp in 1904 increased their popularity. By 1922, several types of flashlights were available. At this point, there were an estimated 10 million users in the United States. Annual sales were around 20 million dollars. They were also quite popular in China.
Fact #3. Flashlights are a relatively simple device. They take a charge from a battery, or set of batteries, and convert it into light. This is accomplished through use of a simple circuit and a little bulb of tungsten, halogen, or LED. A concave reflector rests inside the flashlight head. This helps to both redirect and magnify the light from the bulb. This material often works in concert with a zoom lens. It can be manipulated to change the intensity of the light. This light is generally measured in lumens. While it's an easy way to understand how bright the flashlight can get, it doesn't directly correlate to the distance the light can travel.
Fact #4. Before the invention of flashlights, lighting implements ran on oil. The introduction of the flashlight, and it's subsequent popularity, had some unforeseen consequences. One of the side effects was that it more or less torpedoed the whaling industry. It's primary purpose was to provide oil as fuel for light, and people had much less use for this substance than they did previously.
Fact #5. There are no shortage of options out there. It's really dependent on what's most useful for you. If you need one for emergencies, or camping, you don't want something too big, or with too short a battery life. Giant superpowered flashlights aren't really the best for getting into your tent at night.
