Fact #1. The first 4k camera, the Origin, was introduced by the DALSA Corporation in 2003. It had a relatively high bit depth, and an uncompressed output. The linear exposure latitude was equivalent to more than 13 stops. This meant it was capable of gathering more light information.
Fact #2. 4k cameras were finally ready for production in 2007. Red Digital introduced the RED ONE, which could capture images up to 60 frames per second. Peter Jackson was one of the first directors to test these out. He used two prototypes to film a 12 minute short. The resulting footage convinced other filmmakers to get on board.
Fact #3. Shooting with 4k cameras increases the quality of HD video. They over-sample the pixels to provide sharper images. They also improve color data and make it easier to grade. Additionally, they are able to reduce or eliminate common video artifacts.
Fact #4. There are two main 4k resolution standards. DCI 4k is widely used by the film and video production industry. This is primarily due to the wider aspect ratio it affords. UHD-1 is the standard for televisions and computers. It has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of 1080p.
Fact #5. By the year 2025, more than half of all the households in the US will have a 4k TV. This is a much faster adoption rate than 1080p. More and more people are beginning to understand what 4k is. The increased interest from consumers has started to drive prices down, and sales figures up.
