In mid-2020, humanity will launch the largest and most powerful telescope ever put into space which will provide a new set of eyes on the cosmos that promises to engrave humanity's understanding of our place in the universe forever.
There are four main scientific goals for JWST: to learn about the first stars in the universe; the first galaxies; understand the birth of stars; to characterize exoplanets and gain insight in to the origin of life elsewhere; and, well, to answer questions we haven't even thought to ask.
