Step 1: Tilt glass
Tilt the glass slightly and pour the pale ale until the glass is a bit more than half full.
Tip
Pouring the ale quickly creates a bigger head that helps support the layering.
Step 2: Position the spoon
Hold a round soupspoon upside-down over the middle of the glass.
Tip
Some people bend the spoon handle into a horizontal 'S' shape that can be balanced on the edge of the glass.
Step 3: Pour
Pour the Guinness very slowly over the center of the spoon, letting it run over the sides and into the glass.
Step 4: Bottoms up!
Congratulations. You’ve made a black and tan. Bottoms up!

'Black and tan' once had a less cheery connotation, referring to the black-and-tan-clad British troops who fought the rebels during the Irish war of independence.
