Description:
Not everything we post online stays anonymous; it’s an all too familiar fallacy that ‘anything goes’ in a digital world. Whether it’s a poorly worded comment or an outright threat, the things we do and say on the internet can result in landing ourselves in some pretty hot water. Something posted in the heat of the moment or sarcasm taken the wrong way -- what we say online can attract the attention of law enforcement.
It’s all fun and games until someone ends up in jail. People like to think that what they do and say online doesn’t matter, because they are just one person among billions. Surely that one post doesn’t even make a ripple, right? Well, here are a few people that were wrong.
While going through an incredibly difficult divorce, where his custody rights for his child were on the line, Bryon of Ohio thought nothing of venting his frustrations on Facebook. The rant called his soon-to-be-ex-wife an “evil, vindictive woman” that just wanted to ruin her husband’s life and take away his son, ending with “all you need to do is say that you're scared of your husband or domestic partner…” His wife found out about the post and reported it. ‘USA Today’ reported that Bryon was found in contempt and offered him a choice: sixty days in jail or post an apology to his wife on Facebook for thirty days. Needless to say, Bryon chose to post an apology. Bryon’s lawyer however was shocked, saying he never thought his client could be found in contempt when he did nothing but vent. Clearly his wife disagreed. In addition to the apology, he was also ordered to pay $1,156 in back child support and his wife’s legal fees.
