Toledo, Fiestas Nuestra Senora de la Estrella, Day 1+2 - Spain 4K Travel Channel

Near our accommodation in Toledo is the Ermita de la Virgen de la Estrella. The brotherhood of the same name founded it in 1611 in neighboring Santiago del Arrabal. Before this, a chapel from the 14th century stood on this place. Every year in May, the brotherhood Hermandad de la Estrella de Toledo organize celebrations dedicated to the Senora de la Estrella. The festivities last 9 days and end on the fourth Sunday of May. The end is a procession, where the men carry the Statue of Virgin Estrella through the entire neighborhood. In December one shows a large Christmas crib here.
We are lucky to take part in this celebration for three days and to see the procession the last day.
We soon realize that this is not just a religious celebration. Many people from the surroundings make a pilgrimage to see the statue and to meet on the place in front of the hermitage in the evening.
The evening is filled with dancing, singing, eating, and drinking. Competitions and raffles are also held. But the most important is the exchange of information with relatives and friends.
Already in the evening, one shows us the statue of the Senora de Estrella in the church. Not without mentioning that she will still be decorated for the procession. The next day begins with a devotional in the hermitage.
In large cauldrons, one prepares Migas, a local specialty. It consists of bread fried in the fat of the chorizo. But also Churros with chocolate and homemade lemonade must not be missing.
The children take part in these festivities all the time and get to know the social life early on.
The festival is a religious festival but also promotes the living together in the community. One talks about what was good and what was less good in the last year. Thus it is a corrective of the public opinion. For young people, it is a good opportunity to get to know each other.

In unmittelbarer Nähe zu unserer Unterkunft in Toledo liegt die Ermita de la Virgen de la Estrella. Sie wurde 1611 von der gleichnamigen Bruderschaft im benachbarten Santiago del Arrabal gegründet. Davor existierte an dieser Stelle eine Kapelle aus dem 14. Jahrhundert.
Jedes Jahr im Mai veranstaltet die Bruderschaft, Hermandad de la Estrella de Toledo, Feste zu Ehren der Senora de la Estrella. Die Feste dauern 9 Tage und enden am vierten Sonntag im Mai mit einer Prozession, bei der die Statue der Jungfrau Estrella durch den ganzen Stadtteil getragen wird. Im Dezember wird hier eine großartige Weihnachtskrippe ausgestellt.
Wir haben das Glück drei Tage an diesem Fest teilnehmen zu dürfen und am letzten Tag die Prozession zu sehen.
Rasch wird uns klar, dass es sich dabei nicht nur um ein religiöses Fest handelt. Viele Menschen unternehmen eine Wallfahrt aus der Umgebung um die Statue zu sehen und versammeln sich abends auf dem Platz vor der Eremitage.
Dort wird getanzt, gesungen, gegessen und getrunken. Daneben finden Wettkämpfen und Verlosungen statt. Am Wichtigsten ist aber der Informationsaustausch mit Verwandten und Freunden.
Bereits am Abend zeigte man uns die Statue der Senora de la Estrella in der Kirche. Nicht ohne uns darauf hinzuweisen, dass sie für die Prozession noch festlich geschmückt wird.
Der nächste Tag beginnt mit einer Andacht in der Eremitage.
In großen Bottichen wird Migas hergestellt. Hierbei handelt es sich um Brot, dass im Fett der Chorizo gebraten wird. Churros mit Schokolade und selbstgemachte Limonaden werden verteilt.
Die Kinder nehmen die ganze Zeit an diesen Festlichkeiten teil und lernen so schon früh das gesellschaftliche Leben kennen.
Somit ist das Fest kein rein religiöses Fest, sondern es fördert das Zusammenleben der Gemeinschaft. Man erzählt sich, was gut war im letzten Jahr und was weniger gut war. Somit ist es auch ein Korrektiv der öffentlichen Meinung. Für junge Menschen ist es eine gute Gelegenheit sich kennen zu lernen.
