At SXSWedu we ran into the Micro:bit guys. They mentioned that this ARM-based micro computer would be a perfect fit for payload dropping with DroneBlocks. So far I've been really impressed with the capabilities and everything was programmed using JavaScript. They have Python and Block programming libraries as well. As far as I can tell the code gets compiled into a hex file and then loaded onto the controller.
I'm working on a 3D printable case for this to be mounted on my DJI Phantom 4. If that proves successful I will put some thought into a universal mount that can fit on almost any drone.
The Micro:bit is currently available in the UK, but after talking with their team it sounds like it's only a matter of time before they are readily available here in the states. I believe they are undergoing FCC approval.
I think this will be a great platform for those interested in STEM and coding. Being able to program the Micro:bit, mount it to a drone, and trigger it via DroneBlocks will be a fun and challenging endeavor.
