Liz (Dakota Fanning) möchte nach ihrer Drogenabhängigkeit einen Neustart machen und zieht deshalb in eine Kleinstadt. Sie hat einen verwitweten Mann (William Houston) geheiratet und eine Arbeit als Hebamme gefunden. Es dauert nicht lange bis Liz von der Vergangenheit, in Gestalt von Reverend (Guy Pearce), eingeholt wird. Der entstellte Geistliche beabsichtigt Liz im Auftrag Gottes zu bestrafen. Doch niemand will Liz Glauben schenken. Deshalb nimmt Liz alleine den Kampf gegen den Pastor auf.
