In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew unboxes and sets up the Byrd 4K video drone from GDU: the Global Drone Union. The Byrd is a purpose-built aerial camera platform, measuring 660mm across with 12-inch, folding propellers. The aircraft itself folds down into a compact size for transportation and storage, and includes a detachable, three-axis camera gimbal. In addition to GPS, the Byrd also incorporates optical flow and ultrasonic sensors for altitude and position hold. Telemetry and a First-Person View (FPV) video feed are provided via an app, which is a free download available for both Android and iOS devices. In addition to aircraft control, the included radio incorporates buttons for still image and video capture, as well as yaw and pitch controls for the gimbal. The Byrd is powered by a proprietary, cartridge-style lithium-polymer battery, with a 14.8v nominal charge rating and a 6,700 mAH capacity.
