In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew provides a side-by-side comparison between the new FLIR Duo – announced at CES 2017 – and the FLIR Vue. Introduced a little more than one year ago, the Vue marked the company's first release of a product developed specifically for the Small Unmanned Aircraft System market. The Duo is the same size and shape as a GoPro Hero sports camera and has similar control inputs, making it compatible with gimbals, drones and other accessories designed to work with the Hero3 and Hero4. While the Duo includes both a thermal sensor and a visible light camera, this review is focused primarily on its thermal imaging capabilities. The Duo incorporates a Lepton thermal imaging sensor with a resolution of 160x120 pixels, as compared with the Vue, which is built around a Tau2 sensor with a resolution of 640x512 pixels. Also, the Duo is limited to nine frames per second,while the Vue delivers full 30 frames per second. Multiple color palettes, including WhiteHot, Rainbow and Arctic are tested, as well as the MSX hybrid imaging system implemented on the Duo. When MSX is enabled, the Duo runs an edge-detection algorithm on the visible light image and then superimposes those edges onto the thermal image, enhancing the user's ability to identify subjects, in spite of the Lepton's low resolution sensor.
