One of the Fastest Spinning Black Holes Discovered!

Black holes come in a variety of sizes from supermassive masses in galaxies to the mass of a single star. Objects even with stellar masses often emit X-rays and other radiation.
The radiation comes from material near the black hole such as an accretion disk, a companion or other material. The object GS 1354−645 seems to have outbursts of X-rays and was determined to have a companion and may have a disk around it, possibly pulled in from the companion.
From several different observations it appears this particular black hole could be spinning very rapidly which is quite unusual.
Join Tony Darnell and Carol Christian on January 26, 2017 at 3PM Eastern time, as they discuss with Adham El-Batal (Boston University), and Jon Miller and Mark Reynolds (University of Michigan) how they investigated this interesting black hole and why they believe the object is spinning remarkably fast.
