Big updates just released today for the DJI Phantom 2's (Vision and Vision + included). This update is a very confusing one to some people, so I am going to try and break it down as much as I can.
October 28, 2014 PHANTOM 2 Flight Controller Firmware V3.08 released
New Features
1. New auto-discharging feature to address the issue of fully charged battery swelling when it was stored for extended period.
2. Battery cell damages detection feature added.
3. New battery cell balancing feature to extend battery life.
4. Maximum descent speed set to 0.6m/s when the aircraft’s altitude is less than 10m and descending automatically
(for example in failsafe mode). The maximum speed of descent remains 2m/s in other flight conditions.
5. Propulsion system performance enhancements.
6. Dynamic Home Point, updates every 2 seconds.
7. Variable Altitude settings for RTH (return to home)
8. Pre-Flight Checklist added to Vision App.
9. Maximum operating area, based on remaining battery power and current settings, can now be displayed on the ground station map view. This area automatically expands or contracts when new flight plans are set.
10. The aircraft’s current longitude and latitude will be displayed on the VISION app’s radar. When using ground station, the longitude and latitude of each waypoint is also displayed as they are set.
This update is mostly all about batteries, and making them last longer when you are storing them at full power... Generally you want to store batteries at 40%-50% power... but now this update will help you out if you haven't been doing that. The update requires you to update each and every battery separately, so if you have 12 batteries be prepared to spend a considerable amount of time with this. I believe it works by using the LEDs on the battery to consume some battery power.
Propulsion system performance enhancements... however these are only for people who have upgraded their ESC or motors... Sorry but stock phantom 2's will not see any difference.
Dynamic home point is a big one! Now your home point will be updated every 2 seconds to the location of the GPS in your phone. This is great for people launching and flying from a boat... as the boat drifts, the phantom will update its home point to your new location and save you from having to stay near its original launch point. There are some other nifty things you could do with this feature as well. This feature can be turned on or off, so don't freak out!
Variable Altitude for RTH is a great one! Before, if you needed to use the RTH failsafe mode for whatever reason, your default flight altitude would be 60m. Well, 60m kinda sucks... there are plenty of things to crash into at 60m... So now you have the option of changing that yourself from the Vision App. You will want to set it to something that is HIGHER than ANY obstacles in your flying area.
