In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew hears from Ryan Borders, the Chief Operations Officer for Yuneec USA about the company's new Mantis Q drone. Selling for $499, the kit includes the drone as well as the controller and a battery charger. Borders reports that the aircraft has an impressive 33 minute flight time on a single battery charge, and flies reliably both indoors and outdoors – thanks to a GPS receiver, as well as ultrasonic altimeters and an optical flow camera for position hold. The camera is mounted on a one-axis gimbal, but uses digital stabilization to render a steady image when the 4K sensor is used to capture 1080p video. The Mantis Q can be controlled directly with the user's smart phone, or using a conventional two stick controller, which provides an operating range of about one mile. It is also capable of responding to voice and gesture commands, as well as flying a waypoint-driven mission. The Mantis Q features a compact, folding form factor for easy transportation and storage.
