The Streif in Kitzbuhel is one of the steepest downhill race courses in the world, more accustomed to skiers travelling down it at break-neck speed.
But former World Rallycross and DTM champion Mattias Ekström took the novel approach of driving up the virtually vertical part called “Mausefalle” at the wheel of an Audi E-Tron technology demonstrator.
The challenge was to get up the steepest section of The Streif, only two days after the annual World Cup downhill this year.
None other than the Norwegian ski superstar Aksel Lund Svindal supported Ekström with expert knowledge. The two climbed up the Mousetrap on climbing irons and Svindal
explained each detail of this part of the track, which is highly feared between ski racers.
The risk management included safety precautions, such as a roll cage and a racing seat with a six-point harness as well as a belay, through which a safety cable is run. The safety system was specifically designed for this test to avoid the car slipping. It did not affect the performance of the car or the driver.
