In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew uses a FLIR VUE PRO thermal imaging camera on board a drone to capture an aerial perspective on a firefighter training exercise involving an actual residential structure: a 1,600-square-foot, single-story home that burned to the ground at the conclusion of the drill. Using the FLIR-equipped drone, the crew was able to determine the location inside the building where the fire was burning, as well as seeing heat escaping through a hole cut in the roof for ventilation, and a broken window. The primary drone for this mission was a 3D-printed Vortex hexacopter from Atlanta Hobby, equipped with a DJI E600 power system, NAZA flight controller and a 5.8 GHz FPV video transmitter connected to the FLIR, as well as a GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition mounted in a Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal. The drone was controlled using a Futaba 14SG radio and Fat Shark goggles were used to receive the video downlink, and powered by Venom Drone lithium-polymer batteries.
