In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew talks with Shawn Kovacs of Gem Systems about his company's missile-shaped magnetometers. They are designed to be carried aloft by drones and detect metal and minerals at or near the surface of the earth. Specific applications for this technology include mineral exploration, oil and gas exploration, pipeline detection, archaeological exploration, as well as landmines and unexploded ordinance (UXO). In spite of their size, the magnetometers are surprisingly light weight and can be flown from conventional multirotor drones, such as the DJI Matrice M600. For larger aircraft, Gem Systems also produces a gradiometer, which incorporates two magnetometers and is capable of detecting even very small metal objects from the air.
