In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew unboxes and sets up the Elios drone from Flyability. Protected within a unique, spherical cage, the Elios is designed to fly in confined environments, such as underground tunnels, storage tanks and utility vaults. The cage is free to rotate in three axes, making the Elios collision tolerant. It is therefore able to fly in physical contact with assets to be inspected, looking for small defects or faults in welds, wiring, pipes and other industrial facilities. The Elios carries both a 4K visible light video camera, as well as a low-resolution thermal camera. Control, video and telemetry signals are transmitted and received via a DJI Lightbridge system, modified for interior use with increased power output. The Elios kit includes a DJI controller as well as a Samsung tablet, pre-installed with the Flyability Cockpit app. In use, the drone generates 80 decibels of noise – rising to 92 decibels in a confined space: enough to cause permanent hearing damage, so always take appropriate precautions.
