In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew flight tests the Elios drone from Flyability. Designed to operate in confined spaces, the Elios is completely surrounded by a spherical cage capable of moving on three axes, independently of the drone – making it collision tolerant. It is designed to perform industrial inspection tasks inside confined spaces, looking for small defects or faults in welds, wiring, pipes and other assets. In use, the Elios generates 80 decibels of noise – which climbs to 92 decibels in a confined space: enough to cause permanent hearing damage, so be sure to take appropriate precautions. For this demonstration, the crew operates the Elios inside a fermentation tank at the Stoller Family Estate, located in Oregon's wine country. Its features include on board LED lights and a wide range of camera sensitivity settings, used to reveal the subject even in dark spaces. A “Point of Interest” button highlights details for later review, and all of the video and telemetry is recorded on board the tablet as well as the drone, in case the drone cannot be retrieved following a mission. The Elios is not recommended for outdoor flying, as it is easily carried along by the wind.
